Where new building construction isn’t cost effective or desired by the owner, an existing building may be drastically changed to accommodate an entirely different use than it was originally intended. These changes often result in large slab openings, removed braced frames or shear walls, and any number of other structural design challenges. Where the building is substantially changed, a complete seismic retrofit may be required to comply with the building code.
